Why E-Waste Matters More on Islands

E-waste is discarded electrical and electronic equipment, including items such as mobile phones, computers, communication equipment, appliances and institutional electronics.

These products contain both recoverable materials and, in some cases, hazardous substances.

The Environmental Risk

Improper disposal of electronic equipment can allow hazardous substances and pollutants to enter the surrounding environment.

The World Health Organization identifies unsafe e-waste recycling and disposal as a source of exposure to hazardous substances that can contaminate air, soil, dust and water. (who.int)

Why Land Matters

On a small island, land is a finite resource.

The World Bank has specifically identified the scarcity of surface area on Maldivian islands as a constraint on conventional landfill-based waste management. It also notes that reducing the quantity of waste requiring final disposal is an important part of an appropriate waste-management strategy.

This gives e-waste recycling an additional importance in the Maldives:

Recycling helps prevent recoverable materials from becoming part of the disposal burden placed on limited island land.

Recovering Resources

Electronic equipment contains materials that can be recovered and returned to productive use.

Recycling therefore provides two environmental benefits:
Less material requiring disposal.
More resources recovered for reuse.

Why the Marine Environment Matters

The Maldives' islands are surrounded by a highly sensitive marine environment. Poorly managed waste can threaten coastal and marine ecosystems.

Responsible e-waste collection therefore helps create a controlled pathway for electronic waste rather than allowing it to enter inappropriate disposal streams.

The Island Difference

The waste-management requirements of a large mainland country are fundamentally different from those of an island nation.

In the Maldives, the combination of:

  • Limited land
  • Small and dispersed islands
  • High transportation requirements
  • Sensitive coastal and marine ecosystems

makes efficient collection and resource recovery particularly important.

Maldives Green Alignment

ESMV's activities support the broader sustainability objective of reducing environmental risks and improving responsible waste management across the islands.
